Morellino di Scansano Doga delle Clavule, now there is a name that trips off the tongue! This is a bright ruby colour. The nose is a slightly sweet juicy red fruit, morello cherry, wild strawberry, liquorice and vanilla. These flavours then lead to the palate. It is a succulent medium bodied red, fruit driven with an edge of bitter chocolate. The name is the hardest part of this wine, despite this it is a very easy drinking wine and well worth having a bottle or two in the rack.
Food Matching: Black olives, salami and antipasti. Works well with tomato based pastas and aubergine parmigiana.
Grape: 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 5% Alicante
Method and Producton: Grapes are picked and fermented separately and the final blend is made just before bottling. 10-day macerations at 28/30 °C in stainless steel tanks, followed by delestages, pump overs, and malolactic fermentation. Wine is aged for 6 months in French 500 litre tonneaux.
Vineyard: Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini bought Doga delle Clavule as an addition to the Carpazo estate in 2000. Based in the heart of Morellino, it extends over 130 hectares. The site benefits from perfect climatic conditions for growing grapes. The harmonious interaction between sea breezes and gentle hills yields soft fruity wines that are real crowd pleasers.
