The Ortonese Sangiovese Merlot is a great everyday wine offering great value for money. The deep ruby red colour. In the nose there is an intense and persistent fruity fragrance. With cherries, prunes and vanilla aromas. This is a medium bodied wine with great fruit flavours, again with cherries and red berries coming to the fore. This is a really well balanced wine, smooth and soft. This then leads to a gentle finish. This wine is a great everyday wine at a great price. Very popular with the Warlingham Wines staff!

The vineyards are situated in Daunia in the Foggia District, Southern Italy. This is in the Puglia wine region. With around 200 hectares of old vines. Grapes are hand picked from the vines. The success of these wines are due to their outstanding value and quality. The Ortonese range is the entry level wine and benefits from great winemaking skills.
Sangiovese is a red wine grape originally from central Italy, this is a joy as the Italians have remained loyal to their native grapes. Sangiovese is used on its own but more famously blended such in Chianti. It is a grape that produces very soft flavours and works perfectly in this wine when blended with Merlot. Sangiovese is a very adaptable grape and can be grown in many different soil types but it seems to thrive best high limestone soils. Surprisingly it does not seem to be grown outside of Italy.
Following harvesting the grapes are soft crushing and de-stemed. This is followed by maceration between 26-28 °C. This allows the great colour and flavours to be extracted from the skins. This wine is made totally in Stainless steel.
