Salcheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is another big, powerful wine. It is a dark ruby colour. On the nose there is plenty of dark fruit and spiciness to it. This big bold fruit flavours continue onto the palate with hints of earthiness leather. spices and earthiness. This generous, cask-aged Vino Nobile builds on the finish as the tannins come to life, but the balance is unquestionably outstanding.

The Winemaker comments: The 2013 is a vintage that surprised us all in the end, for better or for worse. The climatic discontinuity put pressure over the fruit ripening, up to a nearly perfect September which gave us well concentrated and balanced fruits, but also offered thin skins that could hardly stand the first autumn rains. In this scenario, finally a bit ‘”classic” for the decade, our focus was once again put on careful selection in the vineyard and over the triage tables. This Nobile end to be one of the most intense of all time, thus renewed thanks also to the always fascinating work of its indigenous yeasts.

Vineyard / Winemaker
Salcheto is devoted to organic and sustainable principles of wine production. Mario Turrini, General Manager of Salcheto was tempted to the vineyard with a mission to revolutionise Salcheto wine production. This he has done over the last 5 years with a considerable investment. Many of the methods now employed at Salcheto are revolutionary. The three story winery is sympathetically built into the hills and all of the lighting is provided through light tubes, no additional lighting is provided in the lower areas. All of the vines are grown under bio-diverse conditions. Heating is provided Sustainability is built into the very foundation of the operation. Mario Turrini is also very realistic and his philosophy is that ‘Sustainability starts with a quality product that is sold at the right price. If the vineyard is not profitable it is not sustainable’. This makes Salcheto wines are great quality and great value, they just happen to be made in a very sustainable manner.
Salco means the willow tree in the ancient Tuscan language. An important plant for wine territories throughout history as its branches were used to bind the vines. Salcheto (Sal-k-et-o) is the name of the stream which springs at the foot of the town of Montepulciano. This winds through a valley and is the boundary of the organic and biodynamic estate. It is rooted in the historic district of Vino Nobile, in the southeast of the Siena province of Tuscany. The willow tree, a species that we continue to replant at the winery, also contributes to the winery’s energy independence, is today prominently represented in our logo as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability.
